Non-destructive anchor testing, delivering ±5% accuracy on load and length to enable safe crane upgrades at Tasmania’s largest hydro power station
Gordon Power Station Upgrade
The Gordon Power Station is the largest conventional hydroelectric power station in Tasmania, located in the South West region of the state. The power station is situated on Gordon River and has a combined generating capacity of 432 megawatts.
The upgrade project was to increase capacity of the Gordon Power Station cavern crane to install and remove larger equipment.
Condition assessment had to be performed on the existing anchors supporting the crane rail beams to evaluate their efficiency and design potential strengthening works for the new loads
Sixense Mission
To achieve the assessment Sixense has analyzed a number of anchors with non-destructive testing method
The implemented NDT was based on impact vibrations and vibratory response analysis of the anchor. This method consists of applying an impact to the anchor using a hammer and to analyse the vibration response with a velocity sensor.
The analysis of the response via a patented algorithm gave an estimate of anchor length with +/-5% accuracy and estimate of the tensile load with up to +/-5% accuracy.
