Real-time automated deformation and load monitoring safeguarding wharf stability and boosting capacity at New Caledonia’s key maritime hub.
The Wharf 8 Extension Project
The extension of Wharf 8 at the Port of Noumea in New Caledonia is a crucial infrastructure initiative designed to increase the port’s capacity, enabling it to accommodate larger vessels and improve operational efficiency. This development aims to support growing regional maritime trade demands, positioning Noumea as a competitive hub for shipping and logistics.
The Situation
The project involves intricate construction activities, particularly soil reinforcement to support the new concrete wharf. Ensuring the stability and structural integrity of the cofferdam during these operations is challenging due to the dynamic ground conditions and the need for precise monitoring. Any undetected ground movement or structural stress could compromise safety, making continuous observation and timely data analysis essential.
What We’ve Delivered
Sixense Oceania has implemented a comprehensive around-the-clock automated monitoring solution for the Wharf 8 extension project. Our system includes Cyclops units equipped with Automated Total Stations (ATS) for continuous deformation tracking, along with In-Place Inclinometers (IPI) and load cells on the cofferdam tie rods to monitor stresses and stability.
The monitoring infrastructure is interconnected through autonomous operations using LoRa communication and 4G connectivity. These feed into the Beyond Monitoring cloud platform, offering seamless data access and automated calculations, including moment analysis for cofferdam walls. Daily reports are generated for stakeholders such as clients, designers, and engineers, ensuring transparent, informed decision-making.
By delivering precise, real-time monitoring data and enabling proactive adjustments, Sixense Oceania ensures the safety and success of the Wharf 8 extension. This project not only bolsters regional economic growth but also enhances the Port of Noumea’s role as a key player in global maritime logistics.
