In-place inclinometer monitoring with real-time reporting, maintaining stability and safety during Western Harbour Tunnel dive structure excavation
The Warringah Freeway Upgrade Project
The Warringah Freeway Upgrade, led by Transport for NSW, is a transformative infrastructure project aimed at modernising one of Sydney’s busiest transport corridors. This initiative seeks to enhance traffic flow, improve safety, and boost connectivity to major roads and future transport links, including the Western Harbour Tunnel. The upgrade will significantly reduce travel times, improve freight efficiency, and support Sydney’s growing population and economy.
The Situation
A critical aspect of the project involves monitoring the dive structure of the Western Harbour Tunnel to ensure stability and safety throughout the excavation process. The excavation poses significant technical challenges due to its dynamic and evolving nature. Initially, the scope included the installation of 16 in-place inclinometers (IPIs) with an average depth of 10 metres. As the project has progressed, depth requirements have been adjusted to accommodate changing conditions. Close coordination with stakeholders has been essential, particularly during drilling operations, to overcome logistical and operational challenges.
What We’ve Delivered
To address the project’s requirements, CPB Contractors entrusted Sixense to deliver advanced, precise monitoring solutions. Sixense is actively progressing with installing in-place inclinometers (IPIs) as part of the planned deployment of 16 units. This includes supplying and integrating specialised equipment like IPI slope casings, lids, and hardware. While the initial plan specified depths of 10 meters, the scope has evolved to adjust depths as needed while maintaining the original quantity.
This ongoing monitoring initiative enables CPB Contractors to effectively manage stability and safety throughout the construction phase. By employing advanced technology and a structured, precise methodology, Sixense is delivering significant value to the Warringah Freeway Upgrade, a key development in Sydney’s transport infrastructure.
