Vibrating wire strain gauge monitoring integrated with cloud reporting, preserving structural integrity and heritage value during bridge post-tensioning works
The Victoria Bridge Project
Victoria Bridge, a heritage-listed structure, is a vital transport link spanning the Brisbane River, connecting the Brisbane CBD with South Brisbane. At 283 meters in length, the bridge accommodates vehicular lanes, pedestrian walkways, and cycling paths, serving as an essential infrastructure asset for the city’s growing population. The Victoria Bridge monitoring project is a key part of a major infrastructure upgrade to enhance the safety, structural integrity, and longevity of this vital Brisbane transport link. The project addresses structural concerns and includes resurfacing and improvements to accommodate current and future demands.
The Challenges
Monitoring the structural behaviour of the bridge during and after the post-tensioning process presents several challenges. These include ensuring real-time data collection with minimal manual intervention, achieving accurate and timely insights into the bridge’s performance during construction activities, and addressing any significant changes in structural behaviour promptly. The complexity of the structural upgrades adds to the difficulty, particularly when coupled with the need to maintain ongoing traffic and pedestrian access throughout the process.
What We’ve Delivered
Sixense Oceania implemented a monitoring solution with vibrating wire strain gauges at critical points on Victoria Bridge. Connected to dataloggers and a gateway using LoRa and 4G, the sensors integrated with the Beyond Monitoring cloud platform, enabling real-time data collection, daily reporting, and seamless stakeholder collaboration. This continuous monitoring ensures that changes in the bridge’s structural behaviour are quickly identified, enabling proactive decisions to maintain safety and performance. Through advanced monitoring techniques, Sixense contributes to Brisbane’s vision of a resilient city. The project highlights the integration of heritage preservation with modern engineering to support urban growth.
