Solar-powered automated total stations with prisms and tiltmeters, maintaining rail stability and minimising disruption during NEL North construction
Nel North Project Overview
The North East Link (NEL) is Victoria’s largest road project, designed to connect the Eastern Freeway to the M80 Ring Road, completing Melbourne’s orbital freeway network, reducing congestion, and improving travel times. A key component of this project, known as the North Package, focuses on upgrading a 5-kilometer stretch between Watsonia and Greensborough. This package, led by the M80 Ring Road Alliance, which includes Acciona Construction Australia, AECOM, and MACA Civil, aims to deliver new lanes, enhanced interchanges, safer road features, bridges, and pedestrian and cycling paths, all to support traffic flow and accommodate future regional growth.
The Situation
Construction near the live Hurstbridge Rail Line required monitoring solutions to ensure rail stability and minimise disruption. Sixense was engaged to provide real-time monitoring under demanding conditions, including strict timelines, limited site access, and evolving project requirements. Traditional survey methods were not practical, making innovative solutions essential.
