Real-time rail track monitoring with automated total station and prisms, ensuring safety during microtunnelling beneath active Queensland Rail lines

The Loganlea Railway Station Relocation Project

Logan Water and the City of Logan Council partnered with Hollcon Construction on the Loganlea Railway Station Relocation Project to address growing infrastructure demand and meet health and safety standards. The project involved relocating a water reticulation pipe using microtunneling beneath the Queensland Rail Beenleigh line, near the Loganlea Road Overpass. A 600mm diameter steel casing pipe was successfully installed over 80 meters using advanced trenchless techniques to minimize surface disruption.

The Situation

Due to the complexity of installing a pipeline beneath active Queensland Rail lines, Sixense was engaged to provide real-time rail monitoring throughout the construction. The project required meticulous coordination with key stakeholders, including the Queensland Department of Transport and Queensland Rail, to mitigate potential risks to rail assets.

This critical task presented challenges, including restricted rail access, an ambitious timeline, and tight scheduling, all of which demanded thorough planning and precision to maintain track safety and stability.

What We’ve Delivered

Sixense implemented a rail monitoring system to overcome challenges related to limited site access and strict scheduling. The system, consisting of a solar-powered Automated Total Station (Cyclop) and 36 track monitoring prisms, provided comprehensive, real-time monitoring. Precise execution was essential given the two-night rail occupation window.

Track movement data was continuously recorded and transmitted to Sixense’s Beyond Monitoring software. This platform offered live data visualisation, the ability to trigger
automated alarms if thresholds were exceeded, and detailed report generation to support informed decision-making. Meticulous planning and execution ensured adherence to all safety and operational requirements, enabling smooth project progress despite stringent time constraints.
