About Level Crossing Removal Project

The Victorian Government is removing 110 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2030, the largest project of its kind in Victorian history. Removing level crossings improves safety for road users and pedestrians, reduces congestion for all modes of travel and enables faster and safer journeys for commuters.
The level crossing at Glenroy Road has been removed by lowering the rail line beneath the road, and in addition, a new Glenroy Station has been constructed.

The Challenges

Sixense was contracted by North West Program Alliance to provide structural monitoring and environmental consultancy services for the project.
Cyclops ATS were selected to automate the monitoring of the active railway line since traditional survey methods were not feasible in this context. Additionally, due to sensitive neighbors, vibration and noise monitors were required. Moreover, extra monitoring was required to ensure the protection of the historic Glenroy Substation, located near the construction site, from any potential damage during adjacent piling works.

What we’ve delivered

Sixense have installed structural monitoring sensors, such as monitoring prisms, tiltmeters, and crackmeters, on sensitive infrastructure adjacent to the works to enable real-time monitoring.
Furthermore, Sixense has offered environmental consultancy services to optimize the project and implement necessary mitigation measures, while noise and vibration sensors have been utilised for environmental monitoring.
The collected monitoring data from all instruments was consolidated into our monitoring software, Beyond Monitoring, facilitating interactive views and graphs of the data while also handling automated alarms and generating reports.
