Comprehensive geotechnical monitoring supporting safe redevelopment of Perth’s landmark riverside Belmont Park site with real-time and manual data integration.

The Burswood Project

The Belmont Park Racecourse site, situated on the Burswood Peninsula in the Town of Victoria Park in WA, presents a significant opportunity for development along the river, very close to the centre of the State capital. It is arguably the largest project of its kind in Australia.

The redevelopment of Belmont Park Racecourse will provide the city with a major new riverside asset, offering world-class views and amenities to be enjoyed by future generations in Perth.

The situation

Menard Oceania has engaged Sixense for the procurement and installation of geotechnical monitoring instruments. Additionally, Menard Oceania requires remote technical support from Sixense throughout the maintenance and monitoring phase.

The project encountered logistical challenges, as the site is located in Western Australia, while all necessary instruments had to be received in Melbourne. The complexity persisted during installations conducted in backfill, resulting in borehole collapses at various instances.

What we’ve delivered

The process involved testing, preparing, packing, and shipping all instruments to Perth, including the 3-meter-long inclinometer casings. Also, precise coordination was vital to ensuring proper preparation of all installations/tools, minimising potential downtime.

Effective collaboration with the driller was essential to overcoming challenges arising from backfill conditions and ensuring the timely completion of all installations.

Sixense installed a variety of instrumentation, incorporating sensors with dataloggers for real-time transfer and others for manual reading. Additionally, Sixense trained Menard’s technicians for continuous manual monitoring. The monitoring data collected from all instruments is seamlessly stored, processed, and displayed in Beyond Monitoring.
